Yayoe was born in Gila River, Arizona. She was raised in California and received her BA in Art from San Jose State. After graduation she moved to Honolulu and worked as a high school art teacher. She also taught at the Honolulu Academy of Arts as a summer instructor. She later moved to Massachusetts where she received her Masters of Social Work from Boston College.
The focus of her work has been in health care settings. She is the former director for the Center for Senior Health at Peace Health and the director of the Medical Social Work Department at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
Her experiences include alcohol and drug treatment, couples counseling, work stress, job coaching, management consultation, chronic illness, loss and grief, anxiety, depression, sexual assault, supportive care of the dying and working with life threatening illnesses. She has a special interest in elders, aging issues, parent care, dementia and related planning. She provided pro bono services to the Alzheimer's Association for over eight years.
In 2001 she received the Outstanding Citizen Award from Lane Country Council of Governments and the Barbara Merton Award in 2003 from the Alzheimer's Association. She has a back ground in music (piano and harpsichord) and plays the ukulele.
