Alternative Health Care Can be Good for What Ails You by Lynn Wallis Published Mar-5-2008
Oregon Labor Market Information System: Oregon Employment Department

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than one of every 10 Americans, or 25 million people, suffers from chronic, disabling conditions that cause major limitations and decreased quality of life. When conventional western (allopathic) medicine cannot provide relief, people often turn to other modalities – such as acupuncture, herbs, mind/body techniques, homeopathy, chiropractic, and massage – to improve their quality of life. Such medical practices are classified as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) by the National Institutes of Health and comprise a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine.

The terms "complementary" and "alternative" are often used interchangeably, when in fact they are two different therapeutic approaches. Complementary medicine consists of therapies that complement or are added to conventional medicine whereas alternative medicine includes therapeutic approaches taken in place of conventional medicine. The major CAM systems have common characteristics, which include a focus on treating the whole person, promoting self-care and self-healing, and recognizing human spirituality. Many CAM systems also have characteristics commonly found in mainstream health care, such as a focus on good nutrition and preventive practices.
